Sisters picked up from school in style
How would you like to be picked up from school in a supercar? Well, it was a dream come true for two of our students last week, Navi and Jure Portelli. The sisters won the opportunity to be picked up from school in Australian Motor Racing Driver Cameron Waters's No. 6 Ford Mustang GT.
Jure met Waters at last year's local Horsepower Heroes Whitsundays Inc. Day where she was displaying the go-kart she races. She found out last week she had won the incredible prize to be picked up from school.
"I was pretty excited," she said.
Portelli is preparing for the nationals in Melbourne next month which will coincide with her birthday.
Waters kicked off his racing career in go-karts, collecting multiple national and state championships before graduating to Formula Vee. He moved into the Australian Formula Ford Championship in 2010, taking the outright title in his sophomore campaign. He currently holds the record for the youngest driver to compete in the Bathurst 1000, after winning the Shannons Supercar Showdown reality TV show in 2011.
Waters was in the area for the annual Whitsunday Horsepower Day on Saturday 15th of July at the Whitsunday Sailing Club. The Portelli sisters encouraged families to head down and check out the many supercars, karts and car toys on the day, and help raise funds and awareness surrounding mental health.
